Yarg. [May. 19th, 2008|01:03 am]

I have a bunch of deadlines approaching right now, so I've been chugging through all kinds of the boring stuff in comics, like laying out pages and editing and crap. It makes me antsy to watch the comics that I start begin to pile up, unfinished. I miss being BORED during actual summer vacation. Instead, I'm so anxious and grumpy about deadlines and shipments and due-dates and business meetings, that I want to yarg a thousand times.

I hadn't realized this was up until tonight, but you can read a short interview with me, over at [info]addmyartjournal.

read two more totally negative Water Baby reviews, in one of which the reviewer paints such a loathsome portrait of my work, and myself, to the point of being humorous, haha. here it is, it's a good read: click. i'm not assuming any of you will, but i have to say it: PLEASE don't go over there and leave retort comments or flame this guy! thanks!! :) of course i can't control you guys, so if you do leave any comments, please make them constructive and friendly.

oh well. anyway, i'll do better next time. actually i guess i sort of did, because i did Wet Moon 3 after Water Baby and that one came out pretty good, i think, but i guess nobody would know that. although WM3 has received no reviews thus far to my knowledge.

There is now a guest comic from Nik on the main page, and his comic "Lagend" is quite nice. It's still new like a new-born baby, but Nik is an Old Pro, I think, so it will be doing good. Especially with Bob Mackey helpin out with words.

[Under my headphones |old 97s - color of a lonely heart is blue]

A long, long time ago, I started prematurely annotating the Scott Pilgrim series, providing references and "what was he thinking"-type information.

Last summer I printed up Volume 1 and 2 annotations and sold a pile of them at TCAF (with another small run at Chapel Hill Comics late last year, if I recall correctly).

NOW: Filled with dread, nervous to annotate Volume 3, I have yet to even post the end of Volume 2's annotations online.

So I'm doing that today.

If you've read the printed edition from last year, you've read most of this - it's just cleaned up and a few sentences added here and there. (And please note that I won't be reprinting that version, but hopefully will put it all together in a new format after finishing volume 3 and maybe 4.)

Previous installments are here.

The Annotated Pilgrim

In which I go through each volume and, uh, annotate.

SPOILERS FOLLOW

[Under my headphones |KRS Onnne since day one Awwwoooga!]

I've gone back up to Canada to get this King city too done.
3 months to go and at the same time Marian is deep in her Conan story.
So it's been all drawing all day. I've been running my hands
under the tap lots so they don't cramp up. It seems to work.

Its been good. But I've been bad about returning emails and all that.
And I was only able to go to the emerald city con for a couple of hours.

I went in for lots more hospital check ups. This time was at the big Seattle Cancer Care building. They have cancer hats that they give out in the lobby.
I feel like medical technology has advanced since my last check up.
The barium drink(berry-yum) that they gave me for the cat scan was the best yet and after they took blood they put a thing on my arm so it wouldn't bruise. It's like mutherfucking flying cars.

Anyway, comic books.
I'm really happy with the new book so far. Here's some cover roughs that probly look nothing like the final cover. I doubt that TP is gonna let me do the giant 2. I want this book to be it's own animal and not just another issue of a series.

I used to always say that the more you draw the more you draw. It's so true.
Along with the pages I've been doing lots of stuff that has no buisness being printed.

Here's a pictue I drew of Marian dreaming of barbarian shit.

And don't worry that Otter thing isn't some horrible sleepybabymuffinface name for her. It's pat of an elaborate story I told her about when this comic book life pays off and we live in a huge palacial estate how I'll have the buttler bring in well trained animals in vests to wake her.

Perfectly reasonable.

And here's a comic I drew her, cause I'm all romantic like that:

Not to be outdone Marian did this awesome comic in between pages.

All Wark and no play..

Now I'm going to bed, the alarm's set for 8. Tommorow I draw like fire, because paper burns.

I made stuff! But it's not comics. [May. 16th, 2008|11:06 pm]

finkenstein
I took a break this week from drawing because well, I am a little burnt out on it between work and home. I needed to take a breather and do something for me, specifically with sparkles.

So I made some clothes!

It was actually a total pain in the ass/back/farts cuz sewing machines are dick holes and I HATE winding a bobbin OH MAN, BOBBIN WINDING am I right 2 people who know what I am talking about??
As we in the sewing business say, fuck a bobbin! HAH, we say it all the time. We are funny in this business.

anyway.
I found some insane blue shimmer fabric at the craft store and I decided to make a dress by copying the form of my favorite dress which looks kind of like a 1950's waitress dress. It was so totally hard to get the measurements and cuts right without a pattern but I think I pulled it off pretty well, and since I have no idea where or when I could wear this thing in public(unless someone wants to throw a SPACE PARTY (please someone throw a space party))I thought I'd post it here.

and then I found some other crazy fabric on sale for super cheap and made this pencil skirt, which was conversely, totally freaking easy to make:

Look! On the wall behind me! It is my signed by Ryan North Dinosaur comics print! It says "Jess is also known as party central" which I pretty much agree with.
Also just above it is a hideous portrait of David Bowie someone bought for me at a carnival, and all the way in the back you can see just a hint of our gun wall. Oh heck here it is:

the dress only took me 2+1/2 days to complete and I made the skirt in like an hour. Fuck you ebay! I don't need to fight for crazy clothes! I can make my own!

ALSO IF YOU ARE NOT INTERESTED IN SEWING NEWS HOW ABOUT SOMETHING COMPLETELY UNRELATED?
lookit [info]tedprior and [info]tiny_monster they got themsleves on TopShelf's new comics site!! Hot dawg I am so proud and happy for those guys! Proudy? HOUD?
They are some cute guys.

[Under my headphones |Jawbreaker]

(lj cut isn't working, sorry)

Ok, this might be the longest post ever..

So I went to SXSW and passed out copies of Popgun with Joe K. from Image. Here's a couple pictures of the Popgun sponsored party with Under the Radar magazine.

Next stop, NY NY!

Thanks to Dan and Lilli and their cat Wedge for letting us stay on their couch/bed. The bearded lady was quite a sight.

So we had a release party for Aqua leung sponsored by CBLDF, Comicspace, Smith Magazine and a both of others. I met Thomas who helped design Aqua Leung and got it ready for print. Totally awesome dude. Met and talked to Alex Maleev, and nerded out about European artists. Talked to Larry Marder for a bit, who is a very nice fellow. The Night Owl twins from Zuda were drawing machines, and really great people. Jeffrey Brown rolled through and I got his original pinup he did for Aqua as well as some sweet mini comics. NY Times was there, weren't interested in talking to me because I guess I'm not from NY, but they interviewed all my friends in the room and at least mentioned me. Here's pics, video and scans from the partay!

My buddy Ken gave me this sweet Aqua drawing, I need to get a frame..

Here's some coverage from the night.

On to the con!

Met a TON of cool people at the con. Too many to list, talked to Claudio from Coheed and Cambria after his acoustic set at the Image after party for a bit. Met some new ACT-I-VATE members, met Jeff Smith at the RASL party, met Joe Flood who's awesome and talented. Had a long conversation with Phil Yeh. Ming Doyle and Jacopo all the way from Italy popped by my table. Talked to Ahmet Zappa on the phone, and apparently he's a huge fan of Aqua, and a pretty cool dude. Bumped into Nick Bertozzi and his daughter. Half way through our conversation we were told that our conversating was "BOOOORING!", and we knew it was time to wrap it up. Saw my friends Khary, Wes and Alberto too. Mark, Gina and Calista from First Second were all great people, and it was great to finally meet them in person too. Here's some pictures as well as con sketches.

At some point, I found the time to be in the ACT-I-VATE webcomics roundtable panel. It was packed (not just with us). Kevin (wizard writer, and buddy) did a quick write up about it. Here's a couple bits from it linked below.

http://theprocesscomic.com/blog/2008/04/23/post-nycc-update/

I went to a bar with my buddies Dan and Nikki one night after a con and got a drink. about a half an hour into it David Loyd drops by and comes to sit with us. We ended up hanging out with him for hours, and we even did a little drawing together. We did a portrait swap. He was one of the nicest people I met at the endtire con.

On to Boston!

This was a trip to see my friends and family, but I did a couple signings at my old shops as well, here's some pics.

The Weekly Dig also did a quick interview and plug for me.

Signing @ Comicopia Kuje from PJ dropped by

Same day signing at NEC in Allston. My friends Osvaldo, Albert and Melissa are in the photo

Someone asked if I could draw Aqua Leung smacking his friend in the face with an octopus. He probably didn't think I would actually do it, hah.

After the signing in Allston we all went to eat and drink (thanks to NEC for picking up the bill, as well as giving me some books to read) Here's me, my girlfriend Cassandra, Jess and Jen the super twins. Jess made me a cake, brought me flowers at the con AND made me cookies which made me very popular at the Image booth. Happy birhday to them both by the way.

Benn and Erin, my favorite people at NEC while I lived in Boston.

It was Melissa's Mom's birthday the next day, so I made a jounrey to good ol' South Boston.

I drew her something, but you can't see it in the photo, doh!

My friend Jim also got married to his new wife Jen. They've been together forever, and it was great to see them on their wedding day and I was glad I could be there.

Back to the South for CAPE in Dallas!

This was a super chill outdoors con for Free Comic Book Day put on by the folks at Zuess.

Met up with my friends Jim Mahfood, Dave Crosland, Kristian Donaldson, David Hopkins (Happy Birthday!!) Robert Kirkman, Andy Khun and I met Val Staples and Mark Guillory for the first time, and chatted with David Mack for a bit. I also met Jamie S. Rich, Mike Huddleston and Greg Pak, but I'm a jerk because Greg met me in NY and bought Aqua and I totally didn't remember.. (sorry dude). We stayed with my friend Kyle and his lovely wife. After the con and special dinner, Robert, Val, Andy, Cassandra, Kyle and Britney (Kyle's wife) all went to see Iron Man. Any ways, enough talk, here's pics!

Annnnd that's about it. I noticed Aqua Leung and Maxy J. both got props on Rugby.com on the same week. Pretttty cooool.

I did a lot more than what I wrote here, and met a lot more people, but I can't write anymore. I had to get this done before I left for Charlotte, because then I would NEVER get the con report done.

Scott Pilgrim Vs the World movie news: Mary Elizabeth Winstead is Ramona Flowers

EDIT: the original Hollywood Reporter story appears to be moved or missing. Here, though, is the nicest article I've read, from firstshowing.net.

(Also, PS, anyone who introduces Ms. Winstead as a "babe" or "hottie" and/or illustrates their blog/article with a Maxim-style lingerie shot: wow. I have no respect for you.)

I, Lieutenant Worf, Endorse Barack Obama For President in Your Year 2008

Having traveled back in time to the era in which the Star Trek television set of series aired, which is a remarkably frequent occurrence given the impracticality of time travel, I, Lieutenant Worf, from television's Star Trek-The Next Generation and Star Trek-Deep Space Nine, am now ready to declare who I support in the 2008 Presidential Campaign...

He knows the future. I guess resistance is futile or some other cliché.

Brains. [May. 15th, 2008|04:06 pm]

And then I woke up.

This dream was actually very scary and very entertaining. I like the idea that zombies locate their prey through smell, to differentiate between the walking dead and the living. It would make this dreamed-up chemical weapon a valid way to fend off the zombocalypse. I could also go around with a dead squirrel on my head, to disguise the smell of my delicious living brains!

White River Junction is a little like the town from Silent Hill. We're all just patiently awaiting the arrival of the undead. Or... are they already here, among us?

hey friends: so this is the thing i'm doing. there's no reason outside of wanting to see friends for me to leave before ryan leaves at the end of may. i figure two more weeks weren't nothin' and if i am going to try this comics thing i am going to try the shit out of it. i was feelin' pretty namby pamby about it, but i am committed to it now. you know why? nice e-mails from you guys, money from you guys, basically you guys. i am not gonna be upset if i give it a try and fail, because that is how things go and i am down with that. but it is not gonna be on account of me not tryin' hard enough. if i get enough pfsc done before i leave (i am hoping to finish this dang storyline that is taking forever, i hope it ain't chasin' anybody away from my comic) i may do some more custom comics, if that's the case i'll announce it here.

if i were tryin' to make real adult money for a house and a pregnant wife and such, i would not dream of doin' this, but basically this is also an excuse for me to live As Simply As Possible which i have been wanting to do for some time, and i am lookin' forward to it.
