Todd Goldman is not very nice.
Since the whole Dave Kelly was copied by Todd Goldman of the world-famous line of "Boys Are Stupid" merchandise, I've received a massive amount of email speculating about another of Todd's paintings for sale at the same gallery in Chicago...

(EDIT: All of the paintings & prints of this design have been removed from the Jack Gallery, thanks to your collective action! I have no reason to take legal steps now.)

Goldman is rumored to have ripped off countless artists, and the most effective way to stop this nonsense is to tell your friends about it, consider boycotting his brand, and inform the art galleries about what they are selling. Just because we publish our work online, does NOT make us free turf for harvesting ideas! I appreciate your concern.

I was about to report it, but wasn't really sure... "This sucks" is similar to "Stuff Sucks" and the fish looks like Binky... But I thought I was just being paranoid and seeing everything he had as a ripoff...

What really burns is that he has the gall to call himself 'original' and an 'artist', when in fact his 'work' looks like it was thought up in a Chinese sweatshop. Hngh.

every day on my flist another popular artist, web AND non-web, is posting about this guy plagierizing them. i keep thinking it's gonna stop but it hasn't yet! D: this guy is such a jerk, i'm not exactly a powerful entity on the net but when i update my webcomic i'll at least mention it. i'm passing it around to more well-known friends in the hopes that it might help, too!

hooolly shit on a handbasket. I've been catching on that story thanks to Starline from Candi, but i've been pretty passive about it.

I'm going to see what i can do for you and Dave Kelly now. Good god, this man is a dammed thief.

Has anyone thought to pass this on to the "real world" news syndicates? They always like taking a pot shot at someone on a slow news day. And being controversial is one thing--that a gallery can sell. Being /lame/ can sink ships.

It's not like it's even a good drawing of a fish. Even if it is a coincidence, which based on context seems unlikely, I wouldn't pay $5,000 for that even if it came with a car and a blowjob.

This whole thing is making me very angry!

I hope this plagiarist gets into a pile of trouble, those paintings being sold are worthless to me because they do literally suck IMO!

Let's just hope the world learns that just because it's online doesn't mean it's free to be stolen.

you really need to get something like a news report on him. He's right now being reported in articles saying "Oh these ideas they just come out of my head. I can do them all day long." It's really terrible that the more he gets out there the more support he gets from the common man.
Although I don't think he can avoid documented evidence of when you made this, when you made a shirt out of this, or even when you got a reciept from your product.
I'm so lost for word about all of this. I mean I really love how the internet we can make build a community that will support our talents and learn there are others like us that apprecate our talents. I work hard on my art in hopes to encourage others and help support others by sharing my techniques. Now I'm just afraid about everything.

Eh, there's a bad apple in every batch. I don't think a scare should make us paranoid. Online artists are making great leaps, all built on co-operation and community!

People like Todd Goldman are just a reminder not to take the easy accessibility of internet for granted, kind of like getting fired for bad-mouthing your boss on Myspace.

whoa. That article is one of the dumbest fluff pieces I've come across in a long time. I mean the story had a qoute comparing him to Warhol, a story about 'pug' owners and some 'twenty-somethings' creating a shrine to him.

I mean google may not be covered in Todd Goldman attacks but for christ sake they're there.

Grr, cookie cutter journalistic integrity

That's terrible. I see art theft all over the internet all the time, but that he's making such a great profit off of it is the worst. But with all the ripping off he's doing, it'll have to catch up to him soon. I've seen his Eve L. stuff in stores before, and I honestly thought it was Lenore merch!
I tried looking for that footer on archive.org, but unfortunately, they don't archive images. /:

I've been following this around too and you guys do all have legal recourse... plagerisim is a crime and y'all can take his sorry behind to court and squeeze his ill-gotten gains out of him for this.

I'd be happy to throw a few bones to a legal Offensive fund if you all decide to go that route. I'm sure others would be happy to join in as well.

Quotes say he denies ever having copied people. He even insists that he does not read comics, or watch cartoons. I agree with Paul that there is no Roy Lichtenstein defense here.

If this many people are being plagiarized by this guy, maybe a class action lawsuit is in order. Combine resources. I was dismayed by the blatant rip off of Dave Kelly's work, but now it's starting to look like this behavior by Goldman is both systematic and blatant. He needs to be taken down for this, because if you think the revelation of the Dave Kelly thing alone will stop him, you're way off. The only thing that will stop this guy is the Hammer of Thor from all those abused by his thefts.

I just heard about this. This is terrible. If legal action is not financially practical maybe all of the webcomickers he's ripped off should get together and contact the local paper of whatever city he lives in. I'm sure this has got to be newsworthy.

http://taxidermied.livejournal.com/

This is the livejournal of a fellow artist (not webcomic, but more into the mainstream comic books) named Roman Dirge. You may have heard of him from his works with Lenore and Invader Zim, and he's a friend of Jhonen Vasquez (Invader Zim creator, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, etc).

Anyway, in his most recent post he has also brought attention to this Todd fellow and has mentioned bringing up legal action against him. I thought maybe you could mail him and have him aide to your crusade against the plagiarism. You may possibly be able to use his attorney and get this problem righted immediately!

Hope all works out for the best.
